KATIE HARTLEY

Idiosyncratic Expressions
July 31 – August 20, 2015
Reception: Thursday, August 6, 2015 6-8 PM

For painter Katie Hartley, her artwork is a raw reflection of both her personality and her ever-evolving interests. Hartley creates oil on canvas paintings featuring a wide variety of subjects. Her repertoire is comprised of anatomical sketches, detailed landscapes,  still lifes of domestic spaces, and portraits of people and pets. Hartley aims to seek out, “all of the colors that can be in a scene.” She embraces the familiar and imbues it with new life and energy through the use of bold, vivid, and unexpected combinations of colors.

Hartley’s creative impulses are constantly in flux. When selecting the palette for each painting, Hartley allows her subconscious mind to guide her. As a result, she has created a vast and wide-ranging body of work. Many of her paintings feature harmonious combinations of soft pastels fixed within a lush interplay of light and shadow. Other works churn with rich and earthy abstract shapes that encourage open-ended emotional responses from viewers. Hartley grew up in Great Falls, Virginia, and currently lives and works in Washington, D.C.
