JOHN NIEMAN

The Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition
August 22 - September 11, 2014
Reception: Thursday August 28, 2014 6-8 PM

John Nieman uses watercolor to create visual riddles that break out of even the most basic art molds. Nieman paints collections of objects – dominoes, raspberries, cookies – with documentary-like realism but presented in casual, intimate close-up. He then overlays the image with words in the form of lists, phrases, or declarations, all tangentially linked to the image but requiring concentrated thought. What is the difference between a statement made in words and one made as an image? Nieman explores that divide.

John Nieman was born in St. Louis, Missouri and currently lives in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
