JOEL SHAPSES

The Kaleidoscope of the Mind
April 24 – May 14, 2015
Reception: Thursday, April 30, 2015 6-8 PM

Inspiration comes to sculptor Joel Shapses from unlimited materials and the endless physical and emotional elements that compose the human experience. Working in a wide range of media - including stone, fused glass, metal and bronze, and neon and LED lights - Shapses allows the nature of the materials to guide his hand so that it is the material itself that leads him to the finished creation. This is reflected in the way lines and forms seem to flow and transmute, and compositions continuously evolve. What result are dynamic and powerful representational and abstract sculptures that invite the viewer to see the world in a whole new way.

One of the greatest drivers of Shapses' creative process lies in the physicality of art, of artist and media interacting in pursuit of the muse. Shapses seeks to give his viewers a similar experience, whereby his sculptures move and inspire all who come into contact with the work.

Joel Shapses is an award-winning artist who has garnered almost 70 recognitions over the course of his career, while maintaining a dual career as a dentist and sculptor. His works are in collections throughout the world. He has retired from dentistry and now devotes all of his time to his creative pursuits. He currently lives and maintains a studio in Naples, Florida.
