November 2 – November 22, 2019
Reception: Thursday, November 7, 2019 6-8 PM

Jillian Whelan is an Italian American artist based in New York City who creates fully immersive, tactile and effectual experiences through her use of a vibrant color palette and formed textures. Stemming from the study of both metaphysics and pop culture, Whelan humorously builds an environment for her audience to revel in. A part of the collaborative studio practice Coloringwheelz, Whelan constructs a stimulating landscape encased in gleaming, glossy sheets of resin. Embedded in the compositions are elements of collage; messages surrounded by glitter reading “Audit The Fed,” which allows for a radical provocation to seep through and provoke the otherwise playful spectacle.

Whelan packages complicated frustrations with ongoing economic, structural inequalities in, “pretty pop packages.” This strategy provides her an alternative way to understand the heady arguments which coat the political landscape of today. Working with aspects of touch, the artist decentralizes the otherwise visual-centric art world, providing her audience with an extra layer for their senses. Whelan's application of free speech through her installations tap into the realms of monetary policy, all the while providing a psychedelic escape, a place of refuge.
