Working from the Hill Country on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, JR Rapier paints scenes of nature in acrylic, translating natural patterns into brushstrokes and sharing her passion with the world. Born and raised in Texas, Rapier earned her BFA at Texas Tech University, where she studied illustration and design. After spending twenty years as an art director, Rapier decided to transition back to the fine art world.
Discussing cultural influences on her work, Rapier explains that Austin is an outdoor culture. “So naturally,” she says, “I’m drawn to worship nature and preserve it on canvas.” Rapier is particularly adept at depicting the whorl patterns of driftwood and root systems, creating almost alien forms in complementary earth tones. Shamanic spirituality has been an essential part of her process, and she credits it with guiding her toward “creative productivity and manifestations.” For the artist, nature and spirituality are one. “I have an immense appreciation and respect for the beauty in nature,” Rapier says, “and I am compelled to magnify her existence through painting.”
