ISWANTO SOERJANTO

Iswanto Soerjanto is redefining what it means to be a photographer with his uniquely artistic photographs. Though he studied and attended Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, much of his photographic practises and techniques comes from his own self study and research. His process involves using a masking material to regulate which parts of the artwork will be exposed to light and which will not. The rest of the work is determined by the chemical photographic process and he typically creates using emulsion coated papers and silver gelatin papers. Through this process he deliberately disconnects photography from its social context in order to represent an abstract reality.

Soerjanto’s interest in the history of photography has given him knowledge of the western origin of printmaking, however he uses the similar technique of making Javanese batik that has existed in his Indonesian culture for generations. Techniques and philosophies rooted in oriental culture are strong influences in Soerjantos work, and through each piece he aims to convey the Javanese philosophy of the ambiguity between yes and no. As an abstract expressionist artist Iswanto Soerjanto continues to break barriers and reshape the mold of a photographic artist.
