ISABEL CONDE MARÍN

Forms and Formalities
April 1 – April 21, 2016
Reception: Thursday, April 7, 2016 6-8 PM

Isabel Conde Marín’s romantic mixed-media work is graceful and mysterious while retaining a handmade aesthetic. Marín combines acrylic and charcoal, using a palette of browns, grays, blacks, and whites to create a refined, austere atmosphere. Her backgrounds are sparse or nonexistent, and her images are pared down to a few essential lines and shadows. On some of her canvases, Marín uses her materials to create an effect similar to bas-relief. This texture heightens the visual tension and brings the work into a conversation with timeless genres like classical architecture.

Marín depicts elements and people. She paints ethereal groves of trees that are no more than a suggestion of bark and mist. Water, sky, and land are all treated as patterns in her hands, so that the natural landscape becomes a series of pictorial codes that together make up a language. Marín’s human figures, meanwhile, are intriguing subjects caught in specific moments, their emotions sparking on their faces.
