The worlds of photography and painting come together in Ingrid Gerhard’s pictures. With a photographer’s skill for framing and positioning the subject, Gerhard introduces a unique spin by placing an equal emphasis on the physicality and texture of her paints. Working in acrylics on canvas, she creates images that combine the camera’s ability to sharply capture motion and gesture with the soft edges, restrained brush strokes and vibrant colors that the paint can provide. Depicting subjects that run from intricately detailed still lifes to urban streetscapes to relaxed, spontaneous portraits, the artist gives each of her paintings a powerful physical presence and an appealing openness.
In what she calls “life-affirming, colorful designs,” Gerhard balances bright shades against more subtle tones to form pictures in which the viewer’s eye is constantly engaged. Her dynamic compositions give that sense of movement an additional boost, pulling the viewer powerfully toward each scene or subject. She says that her goal is to “conjure with colors” the beauty that she finds in the world around her, and her images bring that beauty to life.
