“As an artist,” Hyunsoo Kim says, “ I am concerned with human issues.” The artist presents her point of view on those issues through the bold approach she takes to color, texture and construction in her acrylic on canvas paintings. Applying layers of paint that are then partially scraped off by a palette knife, she creates works whose multi-layered surfaces keep the viewer’s eye in constant motion. Bringing collage and cutout paintings to mind, her images have an almost kaleidoscopic energy. But that energy is combined with a balanced sense of composition, resulting in images with a unique feel.
The mix of energy and order that is found in the artist’s approach to texture and structure can also be seen in the way she uses color. Trained as an interior designer, she brings a sharp eye for how color transforms space and moves certain elements forward in her paintings. Calling her work “visual music,” the artist uses her ability to orchestrate the elements in her images with a clarity and control that lets them clearly communicate their message to the viewer.
