GRETCHEN MINNHAAR

A Moment in Time
May 20 – June 9, 2016
Reception: Thursday, May 26, 2016 6-8 PM

“The city has always been my life,” says Gretchen Minnhaar, an artist and architect originally from Argentina. Minnhaar traveled to the United States to study architecture in college, returning to her home country to pursue a Master’s Degree. Concurrent with her architectural studies, Minnhaar was learning to paint from Julio Vanzo and other famous Argentine artists, but her art education extends even farther, to Italy, Germany, and Austria. Travel has been a tremendous influence on both her artistic and architectural efforts. “I see the world from different angles,” she says, “flying over these fragmented and unstable cities."

Painting with acrylics, Minnhaar hopes to capture the dynamism of culture. Good architectural planning, she believes, enlivens a city, and brings people out into the open. It is this energy she feeds on when she paints, creating bright scenes full of human life.

Now living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Minnhaar hopes to bring the spirit of Latin culture to her current home. “My view of the world is more colorful and more relaxed,” she says. “It’s not better, it’s just very different.”
