Israeli artist Goodash calls his unique blend of painting and photography a “photodraw.” Born Gideon Spiegel, Goodash begins by drawing, painting, or scratching an image. He then takes a photograph of that hand-made work and blends it with existing photographic images, also of his own taking. Lastly, he prints it digitally on a canvas. The final product is in effect a multimedia work.
This technique provides for an unusually flexible array of image types. Goodash traffics in the surreal: cartoon patterns obscuring a photographic picture, a girl floating against a collage of streetscape elements, or a meta vision depicting a photo of a painting hanging on the wall. He often populates his figural works with hand-drawn, faceless people, moving through a half-corporeal world. His textures are many and layered, and his colors alternate between murky and bright in the same composition. Goodash creates works of intricacy that extends far beyond the elaborate process of their creation.
Goodash was born in Tel Aviv and continues to live there today. He has exhibited extensively in both the United States and Israel.
