Artist Gabriel Jaquez fills his frames with a series of signature doughy-eyed blobs, loosely-painted ameba-like cartoon characters stuck together in an all-over pattern. In his works America and Columbia, we see dozens of these figures clustered together to make a coherent whole, just like the many voices and personalities that make up the population of a country.
Working primarily with acrylic, Jaquez captures the individuality of these two nations, turning what once were symbols of national pride into a series of jigsaw puzzles, each encompassing a wide range of competing interests and beliefs.
