Vibrant, mysterious, and confrontational, GTaleb's portraits are a mishmash of cultural imagery, popular references, and traditional allusions. Born Gabriela Taleb, GTaleb creates oil paintings sometimes several feet across in vividly feathered colors. Her work, which is loaded with dramatic techniques, is immediately striking because of her curated color schemes. Some pieces languish in endless tones of blue, others pop in red, and still others contain the full rainbow in bright, electric hues. The second important aspect of the work is the application of paint: strokes both sweeping and careful that streak colors into one another and create a dream-like atmosphere.
GTaleb paints people from all over the world: instantly recognizable movie characters and some purely anonymous men and women who might very well live next door. Her portraits are closely cropped, focusing on the face. They tell the beginning of a story; the viewer is invited to finish it.
GTaleb was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador where she continues to live and work today. She is also a skilled aerial arts instructor and performer.
