“I was born in a colorful home,” Eva Otterström says, so it is not surprising that color takes a central role in her paintings. In her images, color contrasts, both bold and subtle, help to create depth, space, and movement. Whether she is boldly juxtaposing intense hues or creating lifelike effects of light and shadow, the artist makes the most of her ability to explore color’s expressive possibilities. When that ability is combined with her dynamic compositions and the variety of textures found on her canvases, the result is a body of work whose energy yields constant surprises.
Working in acrylics and ink, Otterström takes advantage of the qualities both media offer. The fast-drying nature of acrylics encourages her spontaneity, in which a series of feathery brush strokes can assume the form of a bird or a human figure. The exactness she shows when drawing in ink, on the other hand, underlines the sense of structure of her paintings. That balance of precision and freedom magnifies the effect of each component of those paintings, and gives her work its power.
Eva Otterström was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she continues to live and work today.
