Jubilantly colorful and poetically joyful, the photographs of artist Emily Calkin reveal a hidden world. By focusing her lens on the seemingly prosaic, she transforms the ordinary into the remarkable. Natural sights, from landscapes to ocean scenes, are mystically infused with an intoxicating vibrancy in these works. Architecture and other manmade structures are photographed with the same ease and grace of composition. Resolutely curious, Calkin doesn’t limit herself to any one subject or theme. Instead, she challenges herself, and her viewers, to look past the expected and into the exhilarating. The artist uses narrative to focus her photographs. There is a story in each of her works, which serves to push the viewer to see the world around them as they never have before. “Photography is a powerful form of communication and I believe the work I accomplish should be nothing less than extraordinary,” asserts Calkin, and certainly this is a photographer who dexterously utilizes various photographic techniques to convey her message convincingly.
A Canadian native, Emily Calkin lives and works in Nova Scotia.
