Inspired by the vistas of Wyoming and the open west, Cynthia Chace Gray crafts stunning images of illumination. The artist points her camera towards the sky as the sun dances along the edges of the clouds. Refusing to manipulate her images, Gray lets the natural world speak for itself. Like a painting, the sun seamlessly blends different colors together as the earth continuously rotates. From subtle blues to vibrant reds, Gray captures the beauty of this everyday tradition, honoring the passage of time and the light that allows us to see and make sense of the world around us.
In Prairie Shore, radiant blue and orange clouds contrast against a dim sky, looming over a narrow strip of land that’s too dark to see. In Untitled 82012, tiny clusters of clouds linger at the edge of the horizon like weary travelers coming in from the storm. With a sharp eye for detail, Gray shows us the immense power of the sky, hinting at some greater meaning beyond our experiences here on earth.
