The photographs of Courtney Kinnander capture the most awesome and quiet moments of our natural landscape. From micro scenes such as a drop of dew perched on the petal of a flower, to macro images like dark clouds rolling across a night sky, Kinnander seeks to photograph moments of beauty and sublimity that some might miss in the modern, fast-paced and city-bound world.
Kinnander was born and raised on a farm in Iowa, and grew up understanding the importance of a connection to nature, its seasons and storms. That interconnectedness is now central to her work. As nature is always changing, Kinnander uses her camera to stop time and conserve what would otherwise be gone in an instant. To that end, her art requires patience as Kinnander waits for the precise moment when light, color, weather and perspective combine to transform the most ordinary of landscapes into something extraordinary. Kinnander hopes that her photographs, with their arresting scenes and saturated colors, will encourage people to stop, slow down, and appreciate the beauty in the everyday environment that surrounds them.
