CHRIS BRANDELL

Pathway to Abstraction
June 14 – July 5, 2016
Reception: Thursday, June 16, 2016 6-8 PM

In her work, Chris Brandell lets her paints and their colors take the lead. Working with acrylics and oils on canvas, the artist puts her materials to expressive use in her multi-layered abstract paintings. Balancing drips, bold brush strokes, and soft fields of color, she gives each image a strongly tactile quality. Brandell applies her paints with custom-made knives, trowels and brushes, allowing her to use a variety of effects to give her images surface textures and a strong impression of light, space, and movement.

Brandell's use of color also plays a large role in the vitality of her paintings. “Color vibrates in my head - I can hear it and feel it and see it everywhere,” she says. Those vibrations are realized in her images, whether it is through the juxtaposition of contrasting colors or the variety she teases from one color’s range of intensities. Interpreting “the complexity of the human dynamic” is the goal Brandell sets for herself, and her ability to create images that are both carefully orchestrated and seemingly spontaneous brings that complexity to life.

Born in New York, Brandell currently lives and works in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. in Virginia.
