Mexican artist Carlos Arango (clos) creates whimsical images that teem with colors, details, and patterns. Each of his oil paintings is covered in a saturated spectrum of hues that describe energetic spaces and scenes with unbridled emotion. Inspired by Expressionism, clos reveals a singular vision of scale, space, and even language in his work. A riot of color curves and twists on each of his canvases, drawing attention to curious new forms, and a bevy of textures works to add a tactile quality to the exaggerated images. Each painting, even when depicting the seemingly mundane, has a mythical quality, covered in symbols and letters. As vehicles, animals, and a variety of structures push in and out of fields of pattern and pigment, clos's work manifests as something both intricate and harmoniously graphic.
When painting, clos relishes the unrestrained material presence of the paint. With just his hands and his paint, he is able to create these vibrant distorted realities. Like his artistic technique, his images reflect a notion of freedom of the soul.
