AYDA MANSOUR

Fragmented Reality
February 12 – March 3, 2016
Reception: Thursday, February 18, 2016 6-8 PM

Ayda Mansour paints large-scale abstract works that buzz with texture and light. Mansour creates vibrant layers of tone in each thick brush stroke, allowing colors to touch each other but never become muddied or dull. Her compositions are well-ordered yet super-saturated with a wealth of visual content.

Mansour has only recently arrived at non-representational painting; her journey from realism to surrealism to abstraction began in 2011 with the upheaval of the Egyptian revolution, in which she began to explore how to represent emotions, like fear, in her art. Her experience with different modes of painting is evident in the way she switches fluidly between so many technical aspects. Her marks are palette-like streaks here and light feathering there, while her colors alternately plunge into darkness and burst with light.

Mansour was born in Cairo, Egypt and today lives in Montreal, Canada, where she works at the Galerie d’art Cosner. In addition to works on canvas, she is an accomplished painter of murals.
