ANGÉLIQUE DROESSAERT

Pathway to Abstraction
June 14 – July 5, 2016
Reception: Thursday, June 16, 2016 6-8 PM

Angélique Droessaert first expressed her love of color and texture through painting, drawing and watercolor. In 2004 she added digital photography to her repertoire, exploring how light and color captured in pixels can be transformed into something else entirely. Droessaert calls her art a search for “the secrets lying just below the surface.”  She uncovers those secrets by focusing deeper into the photograph, using multiple digital techniques, or by physically adding paint to the image.

Printing her images on paper, canvas, or behind plexiglass, the artist combines a strong sense of focus and balance with an expressive eye for color and composition. The textures of nature, from the veins in a leaf to the delicate lacework of frost, are explored in detail, creating new multiple realities of seeing.   Each image radiates a strong physical presence, yet in the process many become abstract works. The artist employs a palette of shades ranging from dreamlike pastels to pulsating neon hues painting each image as fits her personal vision. “Taking ‘just’ a photograph and turning it into a unique stand-alone artistic creation,” she says, “is a challenging skill that I continually refine.”

Born in Luxembourg, Droessaert currently lives in North Carolina.
