Using collage and mixed media on paper, Akina Tokiyoshi creates everyday still lifes. Modern conveniences like computers and shrink-wrapped groceries sit in piles reformed from slips of photos and paper. The resulting collections of ordinary objects seem legible and cohesive until closer inspection reveals unexpected fragments and recombinations. Tokiyoshi aims to create “almost illustrations,” works that enhance rather than feel like inadequate imitations of the reality on which they are based. Each work builds on this new reality with crisp color and casual composition.
Akina Tokiyoshi lives and works from Osaka, Japan.
