Kunstmuseum Basel Set to Reopen in April
The Kunstmuseum Basel is set to reopen in April following 12 months of closure. It will reopen with a new wing which cost $103 million to build. The first exhibition will open to the public on April 17. Throughout its closure, the Kunstmuseum loaned several of its works to national museums and international institutions. Full Story Here →
Art Institute of Chicago Recreates Vincent van Gogh’s Bedroom
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to spend the night in Vincent van Gogh’s bedroom, then wonder no more because the Art Institute of Chicago has expertly recreated his room and posted the property on Airbnb. The room can be rented for $10 per night. One modern difference is that the replica room comes with cable TV and WiFi. Full Story Here →
Knoedler Gallery Settles in Fake Rothko Case
Domenico and Eleanore De Sole have settled the case regarding a fake Mark Rothko painting they purchased from the Knoedler Gallery in New York. The argument was that former director Ann Freedman purposely passed the painting off as authentic. The De Soles were asking for $25 million but it is not known how much they eventually settled for. Never-Before-Seen works by Picasso discovered
The Telegraph reports that 271 never-before-seen works by Pablo Picasso have been released. The works, estimated to be worth in excess of €60 million, were held by a French electrician and his wife. The electrician used to work for Picasso and he kept the works inside a trunk in his garage for years. They include watercolors, lithographs, portraits, sketches, and nine collages. Full Story Here →
Stolen Glass Sculpture Recovered
A $20,000 Dale Chihuly sculpture has been recovered after it was stolen last week. The person who stole it returned it undamaged a few days later. Police are still investigating with hopes of identifying the thief. This is not the first time Chihuly’s work has been targeted by thieves, with over 90 of his sculptures stolen and sold by an employee of his studio. Full Story Here →
Treasure Trove of Priceless Artwork Discovered in Geneva
A large haul of priceless Roman and Etruscan antiques owned by British art dealer Robin Symes, have been discovered in a storage facility in Geneva. Some of the works date from the second century B.C., and most of the items discovered are thought to have been looted from archaeological sites. All of the antiquities have been returned to Rome and they will be shown at a press conference later this week. Full Story Here →
