Shots Fired at Berlin Museum Dedicated to Gay Life and History

Reports of a damaged window resulted in the discovery of a number of small bullets shot at the Schwules museum in Berlin on Monday. As a leading institute in the representation of the LGBTIQ community, it is possible that the attack was motivated by homophobia. The department for state security that deals with “politically motivated crimes” will take over the investigation.  Full Story Here →

 

Never-Before-Seen Photo of Joe Strummer to go on Show at the National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery in London is set to show never-before-seen photographs of punk star Joe Strummer and actor Dennis Hopper. These photographs of The Clash member and Hollywood actor will go on display alongside over 100 other works by William Eggleston in the first museum exhibit devoted to his work.  Full Story Here →

Unseen Footage of Andy Warhol Playing… Andy Warhol

An unseen video of artist and spectacle Andy Warhol has been found by longtime friend and follower Paige Powell. This video, along with more from her archive, is being featured at the Portland Art Museum in a show called “The Ride.” These videos are shown montaged within photos of artist and former boyfriend of Powell, Jean-Michel Basquiat, watching TV in a limo. Full Story Here →

With Museum Shows in Europe, Barbie Gets Her Moment With the Masters

Barbie will be featured in a multitude of international museum shows across Europe. Currently in Milan’s Museum of Cultures, this iconic doll and all her accessories will move on to Rome this Sunday. The exhibition will not focus on the controversies of gender and body standards Mattel has been  criticized for. Instead, it will focus on the doll’s cultural evolution over six generations of popularity. There is debate, however, about the worthiness of the Barbie to be shown in a museum. Full Story Here →

 

You Can’t Swim in Elmgreen and Dragset’s Public Swimming Pool

Scandinavian duo Elmgreen and Dragset have been commissioned to create a 1950’s style swimming pool outside of the Rockefeller Center’s 5th avenue entrance. In a mischievous fashion, this conceptual artwork entitled “Van Gogh’s Ear” will stand upright, ridding it of any functionality. This is just one of the many public spectacles these artists have created, and can be seen from April 13th to June 3rd, 2016 before it moves on to China. Full Story Here →

Elton John’s Extensive Photo Collection to go on Show at Tate Modern

Elton John’s extensive photo collection will go on show at the Tate Modern in an exhibition titled “The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection”. Featuring 150 photographs, the exhibition will open in November and includes works by Ansel Adams, Irving Penn and Robert Mapplethorpe.  Full Story Here →

 

Stan Douglas Scoops the 2016 Hasselblad Foundation International Photography Award

Canadian artist Stan Douglas was announced winner of the 2016 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. His prize will include $118,000 and an exhibition of his work at the Hasselblad Center. A new book of Douglas’ work will also be released at a symposium hosted by the foundation. Full Story Here →

 

Long-Lost Caravaggio on Display at Tokyo Museum

Lost for 400 years, Caravaggio’s painting ‘Mary Magdalene in Ecstacy” is now on display to the public for the first time since being found in a private art collection in 2014. This 1606 work is on show at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, along with 11 other Caravaggio paintings. Full Story Here →
