Ancient City of Palmyra Recaptured by Government Forces

The ancient city of Palmyra was recaptured by Syrian troops last Sunday. The city was under the control of ISIS since May 2015. The city is made up of the remains of Roman columns, statues, temples, and carved funeral towers. Syria’s antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim was initially expecting the worst but stated that most of the damage done to the UNESCO World Heritage Site could be repaired. Full Story Here →

Man Loses Claim to $200 Million Van Gogh Painting

The heir of Russian industrialist Ivan Morozov has lost his claim to the $200 million Van Gogh painting Le Cafe de Nuit. The painting was purchased by Morozov in 1908 before being seized by Bolsheviks in 1918. The painting is currently housed at the Yale University Art Gallery where it will stay following the ruling. A large number of paintings on display at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow were also from Morozov’s collection. Full Story Here →

Landmark Duchamp Painting to go on View at The Cleveland Museum

The Cleveland Museum is set to show Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) as part of its centennial celebrations. A number of other famous paintings are also set to appear for the celebrations, as part of a series of loans from other institutions to celebrate the centennial. The Duchamp painting was considered particularly radical when it was first presented to audiences in 1913 due to its depiction of a nude woman made up of geometric planes and shapes. Full Story Here

 

Celebrations in Bosch’s Home Town

The Dutch city of ‘s-Hertodenbosch is set to hold a major exhibition and celebration in honor of the 500th anniversary of the death of Hieronymous Bosch. Bosch was born and raised in the city although very little is known about his life apart from his artwork. Full Story Here →

Banksy Mural Deemed Worthless

A Banksy mural that was previously valued at $1.4 million has had its valuation lowered to zero. The piece titled ‘Spy Booth’ was painted on the side of a building near to the UK intelligence headquarters. Since it was first created it, has been vandalized two times and has large puncture holes in it. This along with issues with the local community, have made the sale unlikely. Full Story Here →
