Agora Gallery 9.17 Opening Reception

Another smashing success as we say goodbye to summer with one final opening reception of the season. In two exhibitions of explosive color and energy, our two floors of gallery space set the art world abuzz. Masters of the Imagination: The Latin American Fine Art Exhibition and Enigmatic Visions feature a variety of very talented artists, most of whom were in attendance tonight to celebrate the start of what will surely be two very successful exhibitions!

It was a special treat for us to also present the works of Trent Altman on our first floor. Trent is an abstract expressionist painter who has risen to greatness in the face of his autism. He has won international accolades for his artwork, which utilizes innovative textures achieved through his paint application to his incorporation of external objects. The resulting compositions are beautiful ensembles of color and excitement.

This was the second exhibition at Agora for Juan Fernando Silva. Last year, in his exhibition The Essence of Abstraction, two of Juan’s pieces sold – on the reception night! “Because of that, I was asked to be part of Art Basel in Miami,” he said. “My experience with Agora Gallery has been very positive.” We were thrilled to hear that, and hope that his current exhibition, Enigmatic Visions, is equally successful! Juan came to tonight’s exhibition with his close friends from Spain and New York.

Also in attendance, all the way from Haiti, was Patricia Brintle, who was celebrating her ninth exhibition with Agora Gallery! We love having Patricia’s brightly colored large-scale paintings in our space. So much so, in fact, that we’ll be featuring her in a spotlight article this coming November in ARTisSpectrum magazine. Keep your eyes open for it; it’s promising to be a great read!

Paul Calabrese didn’t have to travel far for his opening reception. This New York native has always been creating, ever since he was a child. The works on exhibition are densely populated New York scenes, presenting city landmarks embellished with a crowd of characters who reflect just about every archetype you’d encounter on a New York street. “These are all people I know. They’re people I’ve seen in the city. I embellish a little bit, but they’re all different; I can never do the same character twice.” In this way, each of his works is like a day in New York: full of unique, lively characters whom you never seem to see more than once.

It is difficult to fully understand the depth of possibilities of Trinidad Urzúa’s paintings without a video:

Trinidad Urzua Paintings in Motion

Trinidad’s paintings are highly interactive. “Everybody can choose the scene they want,” the artist says. The pegs on the top and bottom of her paintings allow the viewer to rotate the individual pieces of each painting, controlling the elements to create the scene that speaks most to them. “It’s like a game, but a painting,” says Trinidad, who has been creating works in this highly unique style for the past 7-8 years.

Pauline Davies from the Consul General of Uruguay came to offer to support for Domingo Estevez and Claudia Etcheverrito. It’s always great seeing artists receive support from their nations, and we are so proud to present these Uruguayan artists to a New York City audience!

It was a beautiful ending to a beautiful summer, and we loved seeing it out in the company of these thirty-three talented artists. These artists came to us from all over the world, and, in the end, the night was a perfect amalgamation of culture, fine art, and fine company.
