Time and Illness (Cy Twombly Affected by Hans Beller) 2 Acrylic & Ink on Canvas 31.5" x 25.5"

Yutaka Fujimori is a Japanese artist whose work deals with the visual quality of linguistic characters as well as the mystique of Japan’s multifaceted and layered culture that includes a combined use of three distinct writing systems as well as a polytheistic religion. Inspired by a particular Yoshida Sensha manga that he saw in elementary school, Fujimori became enamored with the idea of unintelligible characters and the feeling of encountering language that can only be seen and not understood. From that point on, he spent his time creating characters that did not exist and mixing them with characters that did exist to create unreadable texts.

Likening the presentation of his works to street art in New York City, where the characters are typically abstracted to the point of being almost illegible, Fujimori creates surfaces covered with many different characters such as “Kanji,” the Chinese characters used in Japanese, which he intends to function in a similar capacity. He also draws ironic comparisons between his work and the hateful language used by people on the internet, who write things they don’t seem to understand or be knowledgeable on.
