Nick Bautista uses painting and drawing to address the struggles, emotions, and pain that make up an individual’s condition. Characterized by aggressively applied layers of boldly colored oil and acrylic, his work often depicts expressive figures whose features have been obscured by thick, gestural brushstrokes. Through expert use of negative space, the artist draws focus on the subject and the brushstrokes, displaying his advanced understanding of balance and composition. Although Bautista’s work chronicles certain individual struggles, his compositions remain ambiguous enough to allow interpretation based on the lens of his viewer’s individual histories.
Through experiences in his own life, Bautista was drawn to the expressive styles and turbulent histories of the German and Abstract Expressionists. He draws their raw, animated qualities into his works. Agitated brushstrokes and intrusive charcoal marks mimic the emotion of the subject. By using his own emotions during the creative process, Bautista invites his viewers to make a meaningful connection to something in his compositions; he hopes that their experience be intimate and personal.
