Italo-Brazilian artist Laura Pretto Vargas lives, studies, and works in Milan and Miami. Her paintings are gestural and aesthetically similar to artworks from the Abstract Expressionist movement, but as a lover of art history, Vargas’ work gains inspiration from art throughout history and in a variety of styles. Her canvases are filled with highly textural brush marks and color application. Beginning her education as a fashion designer she realized the fashion industry was not the correct setting to explore her creative impulses, and then decided to pursue a painting career. Vargas paints her abstract and abstract figurative works with mainly acrylic and oil paints but has experience and appreciation for additional mediums.
Her artwork evolves as she gains experiences in the world, but at the root of each painting are basic human emotions shared by all in different forms. Her artistic language seeks to express feelings of vulnerability, happiness, energy, sexuality, and so on. Her abstract works express shared human emotions and are made to connect with her own and other’s specific emotional life experiences, providing a space for connection and reflection.
