The expressionistic landscape paintings of American artist Judy Howie Coury delve deep below the surface of natural terrains to infuse meaning and wonder into her emotive images. Alternating between figurative representation and abstract expressionism, Coury masterfully employs oils and glazes to create a luminescent effect. Her poignant use of color and broad, long brushstrokes carry the viewer across the canvas, with compositional schemas that bring her subjects to life. Her complex palettes lend emotional depth to the work, evoking unexpected responses in the viewer.

Coury’s process is spontaneous; she allows her response to both her subject and the image she is creating to guide the execution of the work. Notable in her paintings is the way she seeks to capture moments of transition, with many of her subjects focusing on the changing of the seasons or natural shifts in light. What results are paintings that are both exciting yet calming to the viewer, inviting us to more clearly see the miracles embedded in the world that surrounds us.

Judy Howie Coury lives in Boston and spends summers in western Maine where she has her studio.
