Miguel de la Cruz

The internal lyricism and symbolism that motivates Miguel de la Cruz is an extension of and a response to the hardship that he has faced. Born in the Dominican Republic, de la Cruz began studying art at the age of 16. Due to a lack of resources, he only had access to primary colors, from which he learned to extract a complex and vibrant range. He overcame each economic obstacle with an optimism that is now reflected in his work. Intense yet cheerful colors direct the viewer away from an abrasive reality and instead toward the joy that he manifested to address adversity.

De la Cruz begins from his imagination. The blank canvas becomes engulfed by lines of charcoal that portray both preconceived and spontaneous forms. Profound colors envelope the black of the charcoal to merge reality and fantasy, a symbolic graduation best described as dreamlike. In his work, the human being acts as the protagonist -- transfixed to an anomalous and decomposing environment, but carrying a distinct message of protest against social injustice.
