Mario España

Salvadorean artist Mario España has the compulsion to create beauty. España experiments with color and shapes to produce his works. He doesn’t begin a painting with a specific idea. Rather, he starts with a brush stroke, adds the next one, and so on, allowing the painting to develop itself. España’s goal with each new painting is to get to a point where adding something to it would feel superfluous and taking anything away from it would make it feel incomplete.

España was attracted to drawing and painting as a child. After high school, he trained as an architect. España practiced architecture for several years, but after civil war broke out in El Salvador, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he continued to pursue his career in architecture while also attending art classes. España is currently based in Boston, where he paints full-time. He is a member of the Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston and the Fort Point Artist Community. His paintings are held in private collections throughout the world.
