Lisa Sommers is a self-taught abstract painter from Brooklyn. Diving into each new piece without a specific direction in mind, she tactfully allows her intuition to take over and guide her to a final composition. Wielding a truly exceptional faculty for color manipulation, Sommers is able to create paintings overflowing with deep, moody chroma. This color is all the more powerful when paired with her abundant use of heavily layered paint that gives the paintings both weight and depth while also drawing attention to the layered nature of painting itself.
Though her compositions reference landscapes, the treatment of color and surface cause them to remain ethereal and dreamy, evoking raw emotion rather than being reminiscent of a particular place. This treatment of a vague subject matter imbues the paintings with the feeling of a space that one could recognize as natural and therefore inject themselves into, while also leaving them free to interpret the location based on their own interpretation of the work.
