Born and raised in the German countryside, Petra Bernstein learned to appreciate nature at an early age. She uses both painting and photography to express her deep connection to the natural world. Her artwork ranges from close-up images and paintings of flora and fauna to abstract interpretations of nature’s mystery. She often combines both art forms by using double exposure photography, a technique which allows her to incorporate her paintings into her photography. Bernstein also loves to create purely abstract art. Her bold paintings consist of organic and geometric shapes, often stacked or aligned to evoke a feeling of weakness and strength.
Bernstein earned a BFA from Salisbury University in 2007, summa cum laude, with a concentration in painting. She also has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Regensburg, Germany.
Bernstein is a member of the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis, where she frequently exhibits her works in juried member shows. She recently became a member of the Washington Printmaker Gallery in Washington D.C. In the spring of 2021, she exhibited several of her artworks in a group show in Paris, France, curated by Monteoliveto Gallery and MG Paris. Her abstract photography was published in ART FOLIO 2021. Earlier this year, Bernstein had a solo show “Nature and Beyond” at the Dorchester Center for the Arts in Cambridge, Maryland.
