With thickly applied oil paints on canvas, Filip Milosevic creates natural images that balance pattern and color with texture. Each work manifests in roughly applied dips and layers of greens and browns, often with a fresh dash of more vibrant pigment. As the paint dries in sharp and distinct portions, the images themselves blur and streak into abstracted renditions, sometimes just impressions of flowers. The repetitive motion of the brush creates a unity and sense of deliberate movement in each piece. Brush strokes follow the lines of leaves, fruits, and buds, and at the same time create more regular ripples across the canvas. Tactile patterns overlay repetitive arrangements of color, drawing lines of momentum for the eye to follow through each composition. Nature becomes both real and unreal in each piece, the confident creation of foliage contrasted with each loose dab of paint. Expressive patches of pigment convey the artist’s emotions even as they explore each plant.
Living and working in Montenegro, Filip Milosevic imbues his works with a natural energy and interest in the world around him.
