Nathan R. Goddard is something like a digital Surrealist. While the French Surrealists were concerned with how the unconscious ruptures the linearity of everyday life, Goddard is more concerned with how technology can be used to achieve similar ends. In effect, technology, memory, and the unconscious overlap in Goddard’s photos.
The aptly titled, work MemoryPanoScape Automobile Asheville USA 2018, develops around a glitch introduced into an otherwise ordinary landscape. Similar to the strata of the earth, his images are comprised of layers, of daily human observations and the geo-historical knowledge that is held inside of these photographs.
