Nick Bautista uses painting and drawing to record emotions he chooses not to express with words. Characterized by vigorously applied layers of boldly colored oil and acrylic, his work often depicts expressive figures whose features have been obscured by thick, gestural brushstrokes. Although Bautista’s work chronicles certain individual struggles, his compositions remain ambiguous enough, allowing interpretation based on the lens of our individual histories.
While growing up, Bautista struggled with a difficult home life and felt a disconnect from both his family and community, which became the impetus for his search for an escape. He eventually found that escape in art, specifically the expressive styles and turbulent histories of the German and Abstract Expressionists. Going on to achieve an MFA in Fine Art and, after overcoming some health issues, Bautista not only discovered a way to cope with his struggles but turned it into an opportunity to help others find a way to deal with theirs. He believes that if his viewers can make a meaningful connection to something in his compositions, that they will feel less isolated and more connected.
