Mina Spiridonova

Bulgarian artist Mina Spiridonova’s ink, varnish, and graphite paintings probe the depths of the human psyche. After fifteen years of rigorous academic training, Spiridonova abandoned realism in favor of abstraction to give free rein to her creative expression. Her work is an intuitive flow of stains, splashes, leaks, and stream-of-consciousness prose. She likens the process to “an endless battle of will, inspiration, and discipline [...] to find, experiment, provoke.” As the paint morphs into unfamiliar and ominous shapes, Spirdonova’s fears come to the surface with palpable intensity. They are monsters of the subconscious, aberrations of the mind, odd tentacular creatures of Kafkaesque flair; a testimony of the artist’s love of sci-fi, anime, and fantasy. “Desires have shapes, visions have color, and fantasies have a life of their own,” the artist proclaims. Like an Edgar Allan Poe tale, Spiridonova’s visions of horror exert a seductive magnetic power we find almost impossible to resist.

Spiridonova has a Bachelor in Mural Painting and a Master in Graphic Fine Arts from St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. She exhibited extensively in Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Romania. Alongside her practice, she works as a 3D Environment Artist for ReDefine-DNEG Bulgaria. Spiridonova currently resides in Sofia, Bulgaria.
