First generation American artist Jose Ramon Santiago is a self-taught abstract and figure painter who uses his medium as an incitement for, and an expression of, his individual freedom. This freedom allows him to approach his work unconventionally and ever changing, leaving behind bold brushstrokes of atmospheric and earth tones that render the human form into symbolic gesture, encompassing the collective human experience. His forms are often without facial expression, allowing the body to speak a language of it’s own.
Through the lens of his Puerto Rican culture, Jose’s paintings document societal and cultural issues, as wells as pay homage to the music, poetry, people, and art that have inspired his own artistic journey. A journey he believes is ongoing and never ending for the artist.
