Norwegian painter Kari Rindahl Endresen captures the harshness and beauty of the northern regions of the Arctic Circle in large, expressive watercolors. In her works, she recreates the mysterious and alluring nature of these remote areas: the oddly bright nights lit by a midnight sun, the jagged peaks of mountains that appear dusted with confectioner’s sugar, the sparkling lights of the aurora borealis, and the crisp, clean air that at once stings and rejuvenates. Fascinated by color, Endresen finds stories in every pigment, in the tone of shadows and the shade of wharfs and old buildings. Through her painting and reinterpretation of these colors, she builds a narrative, mixing concrete and abstract forms so that her paintings establish a pattern, providing open spaces for viewers to insert themselves into the scene and feel the bite of wind, weather, and light as if through osmosis.

A lifelong resident of Norway, Endresen wants her work to inspire people with longing and wonder. She sees her paintings not just as landscapes, but as a record of the cultural heritage of herself and her country.
