SALVADOR DE MONTESINOS

Constellations in Color and Form
November 2 – November 22, 2019
Reception: Thursday, November 7, 2019 6-8 PM

Cleverly playing with perception, Salvador de Montesinos creates abstracted mixed media artwork on linen in which two and three-dimension converge. Textured surfaces appear to be kissed by sunlight and masked by mysterious shadows. Soothing warm earthy tones and cool mineral hues emerge from layered lines and patterns of colorful oil pigment vibrating in unison. Montesinos transforms the painted surface with meticulously hand-sewn thread and knots. Peaks and valleys erupt in relief, reminiscent of a life-like topographical map.

In this inventive body of artwork entitled, Vectorism in Relief, Montesinos examines light, shadow, and movement to describe nature and humanity. The artist’s focus is inspired by the late 19th century impressionism of Monet, Seurat and Pisarro. Visceral responses to his homeland of Mexico, current abode in upstate New York, and diverse experiences including landscaping, biology and meditation, further inform his practice. Montesinos invites the viewer to traverse crests and crevices of his canvases from different angles. Therein, in this new art form, beauty can be discovered between the lines of optical illusion and illuminated materiality formed by the skillful artist’s hand.
