JULI SCHUSZLER

Elixir of Nature
May 20 – June 9, 2016
Reception: Thursday, May 26, 2016 6-8 PM

Juli Schuszler's visionary paintings evoke a kind of hyperrealism in which the depicted world seems more real than reality. In a similar manner to the evolution of photography as it became more than just carbon copy and reproduction, Schuszler's work goes beyond photorealism to depict real life closer to her ideal. Her choice of color and application of paint focus this vision towards an almost searing atmosphere. The artist tends towards saturated colors, with carefully applied oil paint obscuring her brushstrokes and evoking the intensity of sunlight and brilliance of vintage cinema.

Schuszler's tendency towards an idealized but realistic approach is given additional depth through her otherworldly subject matter. Her close-up perspective on tropical flowers evokes a disconcerting enchantment in the viewer, with the intense detail, particularly with regard to light and shadow, harnessing the overwhelming effect nature has on people. Indeed, technicality is a key part of Schuszler's paintings, and her ability to capture the archival image of her scenes and alter it to fit her unique understanding is particularly satisfying.

The youngest of nine siblings, Juli Schuszler was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. Currently she lives about 26 miles away from her hometown in Gloucester, Virginia after moving back from Miami.
