Visiting New York Art Galleries & Dealers

Bushwick |Chelsea | DUMBO | Lower East Side / East Village | SoHo | Upper East Side |Williamsburg

With more then 1000 art galleries and thousands of art dealers, New York City is without a doubt the art capital of the world. Our New York art gallery guide is an ongoing effort to create a comprehensive online art guide to the New York City contemporary art scene. If you have any comments or corrections to the directory please click here.

Bushwick: An area with historically low rent, Bushwick has recently become something of a haven for new artists looking to broach the New York art scene. Bushwick is located just southeast of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

Chelsea: With approximately 500 galleries, Chelsea is one of the most thriving art districts in New York. The Manhattan neighborhood offers a wide variety of fine art, showcasing up-and-coming artists right alongside the well-known.

DUMBO: The first stop in Brooklyn off both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, DUMBO boasts the highest ranking of 'creative capital.' Home of the Etsy Labs and the Brooklyn Arts Council, it is a valuable stop for any art appreciator.

LES / East Village: Located near Chelsea, the Lower East Side's lower rent has proven a valuable consideration for newer galleries. The relative newness allows the area to encourage more edgy and exciting artistic efforts, and this is reflected both in the art in galleries and in the graffiti outside

SoHo: SoHo's claim to artistic fame lies mostly in its past. In the 1970's, the low rents in the abandoned industrial building attracted artists from all over. Though many artists have moved on, the rich history of the area makes it a must-see for any art historian.

Upper East Side: Home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Gagosian, and many high-end art tourist destinations, the Upper East Side is a fantastic place to wander around and gain valuable inspiration.

Williamsburg: As one of the largest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Williamsburg offers a wide variety of art experiences. Attractive once for the low rent, and attractive now for its diverse youth and art culture, it is not only a great place to enjoy art, but also to meet like-minded up-and-coming artists.
