Opening Reception
There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer. -
Ansel Adams. Words were never more true than when describing the reception hosted
by Agora Gallery on November 4th, 2010. The bi-annual Altered States of
Reality: An Exhibition of Analog and Digital Fine Art Photography
presents some of the best in contemporary photography. While many of the photographers
work with different technologies and methods, they share an uncanny ability to capture
the world around them. Altered States of Reality delineates the photographic experience,
compelling style, subject matter and the viewer's own retrospective experience.
Award-winning naturalist photographer Lennette Newell discussed her own secret for
capturing her subjects, especially with the rugged primates and slithery pals---
patience.
Complementing the contemporary fine art photography exhibition through a shared
dedication to the craft was "A Year in Pictures,"
the annual photography exhibition of the New York Press Photographers Association
(NYPPA), which we were honored to host in our Gallery II. The NYPPA
works solely with renowned photo journalists from the Manhattan area, and is the
oldest press organization in the world. NYPPA members gathered for a private reception
held on Friday, October 29th, celebrating historic moments captured by the winning
photojournalists. Many of the photographers discussed how photojournalism is an
art form in its own right. Within mere seconds of an event the photographer must
not only capture the story, but consider scene composition, angles and lighting.
In the Labyrinth of Abstraction and Sensorial
Perspectives collective exhibition onlookers were witness to the
manifestations of various aspects of the world as interpreted on canvas by the artists,
creating a delightful dialogue between collectors and artists alike.

Agora Gallery's Guide to Chelsea
What are the best things to do and see in Chelsea? Our Exhibition Coordinator,
Nellie Scott, offers two suggestions of venues worth checking out.
Cuba Caf
Location: 200 8th Ave Chelsea
Why you should go there: A fusion of Spanish, African and Caribbean
cuisines. Cuban fare offers a unique and flavorful experience. The restaurant is
full of Cuban pop art and has a warm, energetic ambience. You cannot go wrong with
ordering the traditional Chicken Tamal Cuban, made with fresh sweet corn tamal filled
with chicken and the Gaucho Steak, which comes with jalapeo chimichurri, yuca fries
and fire roasted peppers.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
Location: 307 W. 26th Street
Why you should go there: This place is home to all things comedy
and is the self-proclaimed "greatest producer of comedic talent in America today."
UCB is an all-age venue that often showcases writers from your favorite television
shows and movies. Many Saturday Night Live comedians got their start at UCB, and
occasionally, if you're really lucky, a big name might just stop by- Tina Fey, Conan
O' Brian and Will Ferrell have all appeared on UCB's stage. Tickets are usually
somewhere between $5 to $10, unless it is a special event.
