Japan: Our thoughts are with you
Agora Gallery represents artists from all over the world, including Japan, and many
of our Japanese artists visited New York this month for the opening reception of
Matrix of the Mind: Contemporary Fine Art by Japanese Artists. We have been shocked
and distressed by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and our hearts
and thoughts go out to all those affected. Out of respect and a desire to contribute
to the aid work there, we will be donating 25% of the Gallery’s proceeds from artwork
sold in Matrix of the Mind to the Red Cross relief efforts. The exhibition will
be on view until March 22, 2011, Tues-Sat 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

March at Agora Gallery
"Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion." -
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
The moment an artist
picks up the paintbrush, camera, chisel or other materials of their choosing, it
can be surmised that a love affair begins immediately and lasts a lifetime. It is
this undeniable and passionate acquaintance between the artist and the art created
that has fueled some of the greatest masterpieces throughout history. On March 3rd,
Agora Gallery was filled with artists and guests from many different regions of
the globe. Spanning distances and cultures, a connection amongst the audience was
apparent: a passion for art.
Touching on this
very passion, renowned Mexican artist Marcela Cadena drew attention
to the immediacy of her work with its dazzling, brilliant colors - feeding the heartfelt
communication between the artist and her audience. Marcela is currently presenting
a large body of work in her solo exhibition entitled Colores del Corazón. "My art
is colorful, like life itself. I like to give color a certain independence and liberty
in my work, using my spatula to produce different textures. I work with oil and
mixed media, and through them I can really communicate and convey my feelings, my
thoughts and the color of my soul."
Joining us in their second exhibition at Agora Gallery, artists Iwasaki Nagi,
Umeko Okano, Koki Morimoto and Sachi Koyama participated
in the annual exhibition, Matrix of the Mind: Contemporary Fine Art by Japanese
Artists. Featured in this exhibition was a cityscape that included Agora
Gallery, entitled 25, by Iwasaki Nagi. During his visit in 2010, New York City had
just received quite a bit of snow - but he was determined to paint Agora and went
outside in shifts, warming the hearts of all who passed by.
Spanish artist Maíia José Royuela celebrated another
year in New York with Agora Gallery. Her ethereal landscapes currently on exhibit
reflect her calm and meticulous take on her surroundings. Inspired by a childhood
in La Rioja playing in the dirt, Royuela plumbs the simplicity and depth of the
connections between human beings and landscape to create images that reflect the
awe-inspiring simplicity of life, where everything is intertwined and simply waiting
to be discovered.

NY IMPRESSIONS
The following photos were taken by
Susannah Virginia Griffin on her recent visit to New York to take
part in the opening reception of
Singular Sensations at Agora Gallery. She found NYC to be full of a special
life and energy, which translated to the reception and exhibition experience and
left her enthusiastic and relaxed in the city. Much of this feeling comes across
in these photos, and you will be able to read more about Susannah's time in NYC
in an article in the forthcoming May edition of
ARTisSpectrum called 'Evoking the Muse' which focuses on the impact New
York has on visiting artists and their work.
