Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition
It's August at Agora Gallery,
and that can mean only one thing – the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition
Exhibition! Agora Gallery is proud to host this event annually, showcasing the remarkable
artwork of juror-selected artists from around the world. These talented artists
work in a range of media and explore a wide variety of subjects and themes, united
by their shared commitment to sincerity of expression and creative eloquence. They
were chosen by competition juror Elisabeth Sherman, curatorial assistant at the
Whitney Museum of American Art, and together their works represent what is most
exciting and innovative about contemporary art.
The 2011 Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition will take place between
August 19, 2011 and September 9, 2011. The
opening reception will be on August 25, 2011.

Opening Reception - July 28
"Every artist dips his brush in his soul, and paints his
own nature into his pictures." - Henry Ward Beecher
The sun is shining, the birds are
singing and the art is captivating - what a wonderful time to be in Chelsea, New
York. On the evening of July 28th, Agora Gallery was host to art enthusiasts and
collectors alike, all whom were excited to see what was new at Agora Gallery.
Capturing heightened facial expressions in daring and bold colors, Israeli based
artist Rubi
Assa reveals just what lies below the surface in his paintings. As he explains,
“Each artwork tells a different life story to its viewer.” Indeed, Assa offers us
paintings that reverberate with viewers from all walks of life.
In his second exhibition at Agora Gallery, artist
Anti Liu presents his unique and satirical sculptures. Jumping out as a
crowd favorite, at just over 4 feet, the Terracotta Marilyn Monroe sculpture signifies
the bridge of cultural gaps between the militaristic Taiwan of Liu's childhood and
the America he has come to know and embrace. As Liu explains, “I feel that my work
not only comments on what we need to change in our society, but… I work consciously
to create a piece that the viewer perceives in states of awareness. Within each
stage, a stronger meaning is revealed and the viewer is subtly shown my intentions.”
All of the exhibitions are on display, Tuesday through Saturday, 11AM to 6PM at
Agora Gallery. If you are looking to take a break from the heat this summer, we
will be serving wine spritzers from 3PM to 5PM, feel free to stop in and bring friends.

Agora Gallery Joins "Race for the Cure"
On Sunday, September 18, 2011,
Agora Gallery's enthusiastic staff will once again take part in the Susan G. Komen
Race for the Cure. This annual event raises funds for fighting breast cancer, a
terrible disease that many of us have experienced in our own families, communities
and friendship groups. We are proud to be contributing in our small way to this
excellent cause, and we invite any of our artists who are in New York that weekend
to join Team Agora in Central Park as we run, jog or walk together. For more information
contact race day “Team Captain” Nellie Scott,
Exhibition Coordinator .

Hot Tips for a Cool Summer
We thought we'd share some of our favorite spots and tips to stay cool...
Alexandra Cespedes
HOT SPOT
One of my favorite places to stay cool in the city is 230 Fifth. It's the largest rooftop in New York City, with
a gorgeous view of the Empire State Building and some of New York's most famous
landmarks.
HOW I STAY COOL IN THE SUMMER
I grew up eating Mamita's ICES during the summers in New York. They are delicious
and a great way to stay cool.
Chiara Mortaroli
HOT SPOT
My favorite place to go to in the summer in NYC is Battery Park (downtown) at sunset.
The walk in the park is a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and the view is
very intense. If you start from the place where the ferries to the Statue of Liberty
leave, you will be able to view an amazing sunset, reflected on the Hudson River,
surrounded by green trees and plants. There are also benches to sit on. If you keep
walking you will arrive at a small seaport where there are some waterfront restaurants
that offer delicious cocktails like Margaritas and Mojitos, and good food.
One of the restaurants that I like to go to is: SouthWest NY, 225 Liberty Street.

HOT SPOT
Stephen Talkhouse
161 Main St. Amagansett, NY 11937.
It's outside the city, but is nestled in Amagansett out East on Long Island. This
is the place to see celebrities and to hear great local music. Always the place
to go for a good time.
HOW I STAY COOL IN THE SUMMER
Sailing lessons, going to the beach, waiting for a subway train to go by to give
a weird smelling breeze, frozen puree peach pops, standing in front of the freezer.
Clara Lemaire
HOT SPOT
Cafe Lalo
Located in the Upper West Side, 201 West 83rd st.
The cafe has a European feel to it; the atmosphere is relaxed and nice. There is
a wide selection of special coffees and desserts.

Roller Skating Rink Opens Under the High Line
If you're visiting New York City and are a fan of skating, check out the High Line
Rink at the southwest corner of West 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Fun for children
and adults, this new activity has added another burst of life to the Chelsea area.
While you're in the neighborhood, you can check out the High Line, with its wonderful
elevated walkway, carefully arranged plants and various food and drink options.
Enjoy!
