Opening Reception
On August 19th,
Agora Gallery was joined by hundreds of art enthusiasts and collectors to celebrate
Paul Cote's
solo exhibition in Gallery II and the long awaited
Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition in Gallery I.
During his solo exhibition, Paul M. Cote handed out roses, red
for close friends and family and white for visitors. To hear Paul speak about his
artwork, click here.
Hally McGehean,
a vivacious artist whose photographs were selected for the 2010 Chelsea International
Fine Art Competition exhibition wore one of her own designs, a Pop Art dress called
"Everyone Who's Anyone." The dress is compiled of images of clever, fashionable
individuals all cut from various magazines. Consisting of approximately 522, one
and a half inch laminated squares, the dress includes many familiar faces, such
as David Bowie, Jane Fonda and President Obama. Hally states it is her "own dream
dinner party." Her innovative creations will be featured in the November edition
of ARTisSpectrum.
United by an adventurous fashion
spirit, fellow competition participant, Alina Alexandrova, showed
off her latest creation. Alina has an impressive background in fashion, having studied
at ESMOD fashion school in Oslo, Norway. The top was devised to accompany Alina's
unique artwork mirroring her alluring abstractions. The evening was full of culture
and excitement for the artist and onlookers. View reception photos and video
here .
The exhibitions will be on view until September 7, 2010.

ART START
Our Exhibition Coordinator, Nellie Scott, has always felt that
art is an important part of her life. That doesn't stop at her professional work
- for some time now, she has been volunteering at Art-Start, a New York organization
that uses art to help underprivileged children and young people in the area. She
wrote about her experiences on the Agora Gallery blog.
http://agoraartgalleryblog.com/volunteering-through-art .
Agora Gallery itself supports this valuable local charity, which strives to improve
the lives of children and young people in need in New York through the medium of
art and with the help of volunteer artists. This year, like last year, 25% of the
profit from Agora Gallery's proceeds of sales from the competition exhibition will
go to Art Start to help it continue in its excellent work.

Agora Gallery's Guide to Chelsea
Artists visiting Chelsea frequently ask: What are the best things to do and see
in Chelsea? Chiara Mortaroli, our lovely gallery assistant, has graciously offered
to share a few of her favorite Chelsea Spots.
"Well I am Italian and like all Italians, I love to eat. Here are a couple
of places where I love to go, for the food of course but also for the rare atmosphere.
"
Pepe Giallo
General information:
Around the corner from Agora Gallery there is a cozy Italian restaurant. You may
want to go there for dinner, maybe after an afternoon gallery walk , but it is also
good for lunch.
What I recommend:
The Capellini zucchini, tomato, goat cheese and olives and the Straccetti, along
with a glass of Nero d' Avola red wine and don't forget to have a good espresso
coffee at the end of the meal. It's really a good one!
Location:
253 10th Ave
New York City, NY 10001-7014
High Line:
What I Love:
I don't know about you but for me a nice walk after a meal is always a good idea.
If you have the afternoon, enjoy a walk on the High Line.
Location:
It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 20th Street, between
10th & 11th Avenues.
Hours:
7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily
Chelsea Market:
What I Love:
No, I don't just think of eating and if you enter and take a look around you will
understand! The Chelsea Market is a place where New Yorkers go to buy fresh quality
food from all around the world ( I find things there that I can't find in Italy!
), but is also a million square feet wonderworld place to chill, read, sit, talk
and see how all the different cultures that live in Manhattan are combined, close
to one other. I always love to go there.
What I recommend:
Aside from the food, there are a couple of stores that sell beautiful linen dresses
and houseware..
Location:
75 9th Avenue (Between 15th and 16th Streets.
Hours:
Monday - Friday: 7am to 9pm, Saturdays: 7am to 7pm, Sundays: 8am to 6pm
Marquee:
If after a long day of walking and eating you still have energy to spend, Chelsea
hosts one of the most popular clubs in the City.
What I Love:
For dancing, contemporary club music and having fun it is a great place to go.
What I recommend:
Show up before midnight and do not wear sneakers, other than that it is pretty easy
to get in without special contacts.
Location:
289 10th Avenue (between 26th and 27th street)
New York, NY 10001-7003

Kudos and Accolades to Agora Gallery Artists
Good news comes in threes for Artist
Pari Ravan. One, she was decorated with the gold medal for the
"mérite et dévouement français". Two, the town hall of Nice sponsored a solo exhibition
of her work under the patronage of the Mayor of Nice, Minister Estrosi . Three,
this September she will receive the "Golden Canvas" from the national Federation
de la Cultur France.
Betsey
Chesler is dedicated to her nonprofit, Cameras For Kids Foundation,
Inc. She is teaching underprivileged teens living in foster facilities how to create
art with a camera. She originally launched her program in Florida and is hoping
to expand the program into Chicago. In addition, she has been talking with facilities
in the UK, Austria and Kenya. The children in her program recently had their first
exhibit. Though it was small, they sold everything! According to Betsey Chesler
“It was tremendous and the kids were there and for probably the first time in their
lives felt like a celebrity. It was wonderful.”
John David
Hart has been asked to sit on the town's art council. In addition,
he is well known for his charity works. Most recently has been involved in two grass
roots projects through President Obama's office. One is music and the other is art
for Michelle Obama's charity works.
