April at Agora Gallery
A good snapshot stops a moment from running away. ~ Eudora Welty
The reception for
Agora Gallery’s bi-annual Altered States of Reality exhibit on April 21, 2011 was
an evening to remember and enjoy. Represented artists who have exhibited with Agora
Gallery for years, David LaBella, Carolyn Rogers and Shifra, took this opportunity
to meet and share their techniques with new artists and onlookers alike. A popular
topic amongst everyone was the subject of lighting, exposure and their approach
to digital art. Leading the way for digital art, artist Michael Katz stated “I just
want people to be able to stop and stare at my images and feel the photo in their
hearts and minds, and walk away with a peaceful feeling of how it relates to them.”
A Brooklyn, New York native, Michael's pieces evoke emotion with their precise composition
and ability to capture a single fleeting moment in New York City.
In his second solo exhibition with Agora Gallery, entitled Vers la Lumière, artist
Paul Cote stopped audiences in their tracks with his poignant sculptural and abstract
paintings. Paul’s use of embedded objects, along with complex compositions, offers
a journey into a spatial galaxy of texture and emotion. A show that is not to be
missed.

NY Impressions
The following NY impressions were sent in by
Corina Schmidt on her recent visit to New York to take part in
the opening reception of
Contemporary German Art: The New York Experience at Agora Gallery.
"My first trip to New York was a great experience for me. Just as I remember from
people I met in the United States on trips to California and Florida, everyone I
met was so helpful and very friendly to a guest in their city. New York is full
of sources for strong impressions and highlights. As an artist, Chelsea and SoHo
were must-see areas. There was much to discover, especially in the side streets,
and I found lots of great photo opportunities as well as the occasional nice coffee
bar to relax in. I loved Chinatown, with its distinctive character and delicacies,
and I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and enjoyed the panorama of the skyline. Of
course I had read about the history and creation of this unique bridge before, but
the feeling of magic when you are really there is much greater.

I was very touched by the sculpture ‘The Sphere’ by the Bavarian artist Fritz Koenig,
which is situated in Battery Park and is a memorial for the September 11 victims.
It is a bronze ball, found intact in the rubble after the collapse of the towers,
which sits in the center of a fountain. Before it is a burning torch. I was touched
and saddened, but also heartened by it as a sign that life goes on, with hope and
peace.
As I was walking along the promenade at Battery Park I saw a seagull. She looked
over to Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty, and as I copied her I thought of Picasso’s
dove of peace. This was only one of the simply fantastic moments of my visit to
New York that I will never forget."
