A MOMENT IN TIME (Sat, 5th Apr 2008)
Born in Hanoi in 1971, Minh was a young prodigy who began painting at the tender age of four at the Children’s Palace. Encouraged by his father and mother, he freely followed his artistic passion. Drawn to the cinema as a young man, he attended the Cinema and Theatre school of the Hanoi Cinema & Theater Academy where he pursued this keen interest in the theatrical side of life with its portrayal of who, what and now. In the beginning his canvases were explosions of abstract kinetic movement, however after graduating from high school with high marks in cinema where he had to follow one film and make many scenes, he discovered he had a talent for depicting solitary moments in time and therefore changed his style.
He credits as influences in his work the English painter Hamilton, and the Vietnamese master of realism, Do Quang Em. As he started his journey as a young painter, he felt taking direction from these mentors was a very positive force in his development.
His works radiate a wistful silence, contemplative in their nature, the subjects invite in his paintings he likes to create them as a moment in the cinema; the film may be long, but he tries to capture the most impressive moment and suspend it in motionless silence.
His figures project mute conversations, catch one with a different mood, style and environment. In the future, he feels he will still follow this style but he would like for the compositions to become more social, closer to his love of the cinematic scene.
This young painter is serious, technically adept and an acute observer of the human condition in daily life. His depiction of this study of life in motion, suspended in time, bears watching as each scene develops.
