Paola Guerra

The Odyssey Within: an Exhibition of Fine Art by Greek and Italian Artists
December 23 - January 12, 2012 Reception: Thursday December 29, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Italian artist Paola Guerra’s highly expressionistic neo-figurative female portraits are wrought with tension, yet inexplicably soulful. In daring brushstrokes, she paints women integrated within different contexts, all reflective of both a universal femininity and Guerra’s own personal life experience. Her strong use of line and incorporation of additional elements such as light wire netting in her pieces creates a disruption in perspective, adding a tension that intimates both strength and vulnerability in her subjects.

Guerra’s art reflects a style that she calls Middle European, recalling both Austrian and German artistic approaches, as well as those of the countries of Eastern Europe. Her paintings speak of struggle and triumph, themes reflected in the history of this region and in her journey as an artist. In each painting, the viewer is invited to look beyond what is on the surface, to explore all the depth and complexity that lies beneath. Therein is reflected the universal struggle that all aligned with the feminine ultimately come to face.

Artist Statement

My art style is a personalized form of expressionism, following new artistic tendencies and perhaps recalling the artistic influences of my geographical area: the Austrian and German art style and that of the countries of Eastern Europe. In all my series and paintings I express what I feel inside me, both negative and positive feelings, as well as the experiences of the past and of today, and my interests and passions. I often paint women integrated in different contexts because in the women I paint I really reflect myself and what I feel inside. I usually use acrylic on raw canvas (juta or cotton) or sometimes paint on materials like plexiglass or wood. I paint in bright colours but also in black and white with grey shadows.
